KITCHEN MISHAP. PAHIATUA, November 21.

Mrs E. Baring Gould, 76, residing with her daughter, Mrs R. C. Austin, was attending to some articles on the kitchen stove, when she tripped against a box, and fell heavily, fracturing her hip.

WORKER KILLED.

AUCKLAND, November 21.

A Dalmatian, Mat. Bulich, 28, was killed instantly at Mission Bay, this morning, when he fell from a staging on which he was working for the Public Works Department, making a new waterfront road.

KILLED BY CAR. PALMERSTON N., November 21.

A ■ verdict that deceased was accidentally killed through colliding with a motor car, was returned by the coroner at the inquest on Minnie Ree, single, who succumbed to injuries received in a collision between her motor cycle and car at a street intersection.

SUBURBAN BURGLARIES. WELLINGTON, November 21.

David Parkinson, 21, a gardener, who has been pursuing a career as a burglar in Wellington Suburbs, since July, was to-day committed to the Supreme Court foi- sentence on six charges of theft of articles and money, value £l4 13s 7d.

AUCKLAND, Nov. 19.

In the Supreme Court, a jury awarded Otto George Thorburn £2OO damages foi- the partial loss of a finger in a washing machine. The suit had been brought against the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, which denied neglect, but admitted liability in accordance with the Workers’ Compensation Act. Leave was given to move for a new trial within 10 days.

FRAUD AND THEFT MARTON, Nov. 19.

Henry William McKay, aged twentyfour, who has already served over seven years for various crimes, was sentenced to eighteen months, being the cumulative sentence on three charges of fraud and one of theft.

Accused deceived business men in Marton, Feilding, and Palmerston North. He was remanded to appear at Wanganui, where other charges are pending. METHODIST SYNOD THAMES, Nov. 21. The Methodist Synod opened yesterday Mr. W. A. Burley (Thames) presiding. The Rev. F. Gardner Brown was unanimously recommended to be received into full connection of the Ministry. Mr. R. Day and Mr. S. Hindmarsh were recommended to conference as candidates. Mr. H. Thomas was passed as Home Missionary probation-, er.

SOLICITOR MISSING. AUCKLAND, November 20

A warrant for the arrest of HectoiRobert Malcolm, an Auckland solicitor, was signed to-day. It is understood that he has left Auckland, and that a total of several hundred pounds is involved.

In the Supreme Court last week, on the application of a creditor, the Official Assignee was appointed interim receivei- in the estate, pending the hearing of petitions to adjudicate Malcolm a bankrupt. In the meantime, the Official Assignee has seized the books and othex- contents of Malcolm’s office.

WATERSIDERS’ CONFERENCE.

NEW PLYMOUTH, November 21

The annual conference of the Dominion Waterside Workers’ Federation opened this morning, undei- the presidency of Mr L. Glover. About thirty delegates were present, representing all ports. They were officially welcomed by the Mayor.. Aftei’j the President replied to the welcome, the conference went into committee.

This afternoon delegates will be driven round the town and neighbourhood as guests of the Borough Council. Mr Glover referred to the movement to concentrate overseas shipping at main ports, which the federation does not favour.

STEALING A CAR WELLINGTON, Nov. 21.

He was out of work and wished to go to Auckland. This was the excuse of Clifford Corrin, 18, to Mr. Salmond S.M., pleading guilty to having converted a car valued at £250 to his own use, and stolen a. rim and tyre valued at £5/13/3, the property of Levin and Co.

It was stated that accused set off north, and disposed of the rim and tyre at Levin to obtain petrol. The car was damaged to the extent of £4O and expenses amounting to £lO/2/1 were incurred in getting the car back to Wellington. Corrin has been fined at Te Kuiti for obtaining petrol by false pretences and driving without a license.

Corrin on asking foi* probation was addressed by the Magistrate: You take a valuable car and misuse it in this way, and expect to be treated as you suggest. The offence is treated lightly enough by the legislature. The minimum penalty is only three months. This class of offence is serious and becoming prevalent. Corrin got the three months.
