CAULFIELD CUP TO GOTHIC.

MELBOURNE, October 13.

The weather was fine and bright for the Caulfield races, which the State Governor attended. There was a large attendance, including some New Zealanders.

Gothic won the Caulfield Stakes, bringing his total winnings to over £13,000. He was second early, but finished most strongly, and won brilliantly, gaining a popular success. He is trained by a former New Zealander, Lou Robertson. The rider, Pike, won this event more easily than on The Hawk. Junot King, who was prominent throughout won the Steeples easily. The favourite, Tryst, fell at the third fence. Howson, rider of the winner, also scored at Flemington the previous, Saturday on Willanjie. Balmerino finished with a lightning run and won the Guineas in the last stride. The time equalled the race record. The winner, which is trained by the ex-New Zealander, Dave Price, has 7.3 in the Melbourne Cup, and is also engaged in the Derby. Spear King won the first division of the Welter all the way, his rider (Wilson) scoring his seventh success in four days. - Headmore was prominent throughout, and beat the fast-finish-ing pair, Tyrant and Pinnacle in the second division. The. time equalled the race record. Brady, rode the winner. Headmore and Spehr King are both sons of Spearhead. Bel Rouge led early in the Debutante Stakes, but Parkwood, finishing fast, gained the verdict. His. trainer, F. Musgrave, also has Spear King. Parkwood is a son of the Melbourne Cup winner Backwood, and was bred by Baillieau brothers, and ridded by Duncan. Kalloni, from being second early, led into the straight and won the,Toorak Handicap easily, making its fourth successive victory, and Duncan’s second winner of the afternoon. The time constituted a course record. Tryst fractured a stifle in the Steeples and was destroyed. Results: — Wtelter: First Division. —Spear King 8.0, 1; King’s Consort 8.10, 2; Stralia 8.9, 3. Seventeen started. Won by a length; a neck. Prince Viol fourth. Time 1.56. Welter: Second Division. —Headmore 8.0, 1; The Tyrant 9.4, 2; Pinnacle 8.3, 3. ■Seventeen started. Won by a long neck; same. Phocion fourth. Time 1.541. Debutante Stakes. —Parkwood 8.10, 1; Gallamine 7.11, 2; Bel Rouge 7.11, 3. Twenty started. Won by threequarters of a length; a head. Valaisanne was fourth. Time 483. Toorak Handicap.—Kalloni 7.9, (W. Duncan) 1; Highland 9.7 (J. Pike) 2; Reputed King 7.11 (H. Knevitt) 3. Twenty-two started. Won by four lengths; half a length. Myarin was fourth. Time 1.391.

CITY TATTERSALL’S MEETING.

SYDNEY, October 15. City Tattersail’s meeting results are as follow: —

Novice Handicap: First Division. — Perception 9.3, 1; Miss Australia 7.13, 2; Gwilliam G. 8.2, 3. Fifteen started. Clarendon piloted the field in the early stages, but Perception led into the straight, and won by three lengths, With the third horse five lengths further back. Timo 1.373. City Tattcrsall’s Handicap:—Don Moon 8.6, 1; Dion 7.3, 2; Valamita 9.2, 3. Fifteen started. Lead Light assumed charge from the start from Dion and Don Moon; then Dion led from Don Moon and Leadlight, and showed the way into the straight. Once there, Don Moon pushed forward to win by three lengths, with Valamita half a head away. Time 2.54.

DUKE OF YORK HANDICAP.

LONDON, October 13. Tho Duke of York Handicap resulted:— Rob 1 Delius 2 Pan torn 3 Thirteen started. Won by a head; two lengths.

TROTTING- NOTES

A fine day and brilliant sunshine

induced trainers to take their charges out on the track at Victoria Park yesterday. Owing to the long period, of

unfavourable weather training operations have been considerably hampered and practically no fast work has been done.

Caretaker Watson has the track in splendid order, and, all going well, fast times should be registered at the club’s fixture on Saturday and Monday. 'l'ho following horses were given easy work yesterday : —Harina, Plain CJny, Vai Logan, Proud Pointer, Great Author, Black Locanda, Royal Review. Allanora, Sedmere, and Mawhera Girl.

With, the Grey Trotting Club’s Spring Meeting opening on Saturday, local trainers will require to hurry their charges along this week. The more forward will be extended, and give track watehers a glimpse of their form.
