OCEAN DEPTHS

QUICK-FINDING DEVICE

(United Service.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.)

LONDON, October 12.

The “Daily Mail” says that Giles Stedman, navigator of the “Leviathan” reports successful trans-Atlantic experiments with the fathometer, an apparatus for determining the depth in a fraction of a second, as compared With the five to fifteen minutes required for each sounding under the former system. A hammer fitted to the ship’s keel strikes a diaphragm, causing the emission of a series of soundwaves, which travel to the ocean bed, and return to the ship, and these actuate a hydrophone, producing a streak of light on a chart room indicator, which reveals the depth of water on a dial. The soundings can be taken without slowing down.
