RUNANGA COMPETITIONS
A RECORD ENTRY The fourth annual Musical and Elocutionary Competitions, held under the auspices of the State Collieries Floral and Horticultural Society, commenced last evening, when there was a large attendance, the. Miners’ Hall being full. It says much for the interest taken in the competitions in Runanga that a record number of entries were recorded, and the general standard of the performances was quite good. Being now familiar with the requirements of a competitions, the little performers were generally at home and had good ideas of stage craft and platform repose, at the same time observing a becomingly modest demeanour. Those responsible for the training of the children deserve the highest commendation for the good work they have performed iu training the competitors, which is a service rendered to the community. A feature in last evening’s programme was the local school choirs contest in which three choirs competed and gave most creditable performances. In each case the test “Home, Sweet Home” and own selection, were sung in two parts which were well balanced. The girls’ recitation 9 to 12, produced twentyone competitors, and some interesting performances were given. The judges are: Elocution, Messrs P. J. McGrath and R. T. Bush; Vocal Music, J. Hadland; Instrumental Music, T. F. Savage. The competitors will continue this afternoon and evening and will conclude on Monday evening. In formally opening the Competitions, Mr. R. McTaggart (Mayor of Runanga) stressed the educational value of the Competitions, which was the factor to be recognised before that of entertainment. He expressed his pleasure at the splendid support accorded the Society by the public of Runanga indicated by the large attendance. In order to hold the interest of the public, the committee decided that no award would be announced until the conclusion of the Competitions on Monday evening. The classes heard last evening were: —
