TARAMAKAU BRIDGE
GOVERNMENT GRANT £4OO.
The Minister of Public Works has advised Mr Seddon, M.P., as follows: Further to my interim reply of the 2nd. ultimo, to your letter of the 17th. idom, in connection with the decision arrived at at a recent conference of Local Bodies to apply to the Government for financial assistance for the purpose of repairing the Taramakau Bridge. I have to advise that I have and have pleasure in informing you that I have decided to agree to the provision of an amount of £4OO. In regard to the authorisation, you are, of course, aware that the cost of maintaining this bridge was apportioned by a Commission in 1907 between the Kumara Borough Council and the Grey and Westland County Councils, and the only way in which the above mentioned grant can be authorised is to the Local Bodies concerned in the same proportions as decided by that Commission. Those proportions were: Grey County Council 5/12ths, Kumara Borough Council 5/12ths, and Westland County Council 2/12ths, so that on this basis the proportion of the amount of £4OO would be—Grey County Council £166/13/4, Kumara Borough Council £166/13/4, and Westland County Council £66/13/4. The Kumara Borough Council is the controlling authority, and I would suggest that you advise that Body to take up the matter with the Grey and Westland County Council with a view to arriving at a definite arrangement, in order that the necessary proposals may be submitted to my Department’s District Engineer, at Greymouth, who will then apply for authorisation of the Government contribution..
