HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, October 12. The Empire Forestry Commission arrived here yesterday evening, and were met by the Mayor, County Chairman, and others. To-day they journeyed as far as Hari Hari. The weather was not such to see the country at its best. They returned to Grey this morning. After a successful session, St. Mary’s Church Club concluded its season’s labours on Monday night at a special evening in the club-rooms. 'The owners of the little boat Elsie have suffered serious loss through the bad weather during the past two months. The boat has been weatherbound in South Westland since the middle of August. The utility of the new hall erected recently by All Saints’ parishioners has been considerable, and already has established its right to exist. It is being used as a Sunday School, the Scouts have used it, a boxing class has met there, the All Saints’ Club holds its meetings there, the Girls’ Club does the same. The Sunday School held a very pleasant fete there On Wednesday evening, when the teachers and friends provided a sumptuous tea for the children and games were afterwards held. To say the children enjoyed themselves would be begging the term. It was one scream of merriment from first to last. Last night a very successful social was held in the Hall by the older people, and the hall was crowded. Besides dancing, songs were sung by Misses Stapleton, Sherriff and Lynn, an operatic dance by Miss Wright, a scarecrow dance by eight young ladies, and a humorous sketch by Mesdames Wright and Paterson. Music was kindly supplied by Ross’s Orchestra (Miss Giese, piano, and Messrs C. and L. Ross, violin and cornet respectively), besides extras played by the vicar (Mr land Mr E. Raine. A fine supper was supplied by the ladies.
