CHRISTCHURCH BURGLARY
MAYOR’S HOUSE RANSACKED (Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 12. After ransacking four rooms in the Mayor’s house at 118 Tennyson Street, Beckenham, last night, burglars took away a gold presentation watch and two ladies’ watches. Their exit was
hurried as it is thought probable they were surprised in their work by the arrival of the Mayor’s son at about 9. p.m. A little later, the Mayor (Rev. J. K. Archer) arrived on the scene, he having been summoned from the function of welcome to the All Black footballers. The intruders gained an entry to the house through a window which had been left open. Climbing through this, they entered the small breakfast room and then set about ransacking the place. Practically everything in four rooms and the hall was turned upside down or otherwise disarranged. The Mayor stated last night that as far as could be ascertained, the gold presentation watch and two ladies’ watches were all that was missing. He thought the burglars’ haul would haje been greater but for the arrival home of his son, who had evidently disturbed them. Even in the darkness last night, footprints could be seen on the garden.
