OBITUARY
■ MR .JAMES SCARLETT. The death occurred at his residence, Shiel Street, Reefton, last night, of Mr James Scarlett, a well-known West Coaster, who had resided in the Reefton district for over thirty years. De (■cased was horn at. Enniskillen, Ireland, and arrived at Auckland in 1863. He served in the Maori War, and was granted land at Coromandel. He arrived on the Coast in 1865, and was goldmining at Nelson Creek, and afterwards at Maori Creek, where he met .with success. He {started hotelkeeping at Wallsend, moving to the Eilipire Hotel, Reefton, over 30 years ago. He retired eight years ago. Deceased took a keen interest in goldmining, and was always ready to invest in any proposition showing “colour.” He was associated with Messrs S. and T. Milligan in the New River- rush at Maori Creek, one of the richest claims on the Coast, and was afterwards interested in a sluicing claim with Mr J. Fitzsimmons. He was a director of the Reefton Electric Light Company for many years, and a director of several quartz-mining-companies. The late Mr Scarlett, who was aged 84 years, is survived by his widow (who was Miss Fanny Petherbridge, eldest sister of the late Mrs M. Hannan, Greymouth); four daughters: Mrs Reid (Christchurch), Miss Eileen Scarlett (Christchurch), Miss Winnie Scarlett (Wellington), and Mrs Discaciati (Reefton), and one son, Mr Frank Scarlett, of the Gibbs motor service, Reefton. The funeral will take place to-morrow at 2 p.m.
