FIRE OUTBREAKS

LOSSES AT OAMARU.

OAMARU, October 11.

The biggest fire for nearly ten years occurred at 3.40 this morning at the Waitaki Buildings, a two-storey structure on Thames Street, owned by W. Aikenhead, draper. The damage is estimated at about £BOOO. Aickenhead’s shop was destroyed, and tilie stock is a total loss. H. Grenfell s mercery stock was badly damaged by water/J. Martyn’s cycle and sporting stock was damaged by water; _L. Frame, hairdresser’s stock and fittings were, destroyed; Misses Cartwright’s three pianos, furniture and music were destroyed; the stock, furniture and fittings of J. Gunning, tailor; Mrs Gibson, dressmaker, and W. Brown, commission agent, were a total loss. The fire is believed to have started at the rear of the building. A heavy wind made it a hard fight for the brigade. The insurances are: —Aickenhead, £4OOO on the building in the National Office, and £3200 on t/he stock in the New Zealand and Standard offices. He will be a (heavy loser. Grenfell, £l5OO on stock in the Sun, New Zealand and South British offices. Martyn, £575 on stock and plant. Cartwright, £245 on furniture in the South British. Fram £l5O, Highway, Brown, Gibson and Gunning, fittings insured for about £l5O- «

HOUSE DESTROYED

OAMARU, October TO.

A six-roomed residence at Livingstone, owned by Mr. J. MacKenzie, was completely destroyed by fire yesterday. Fanned by a gale, the building was quickly engulfed in flames. The outbreak was caused by the-wind staying in a kitchen window and the strong gusts blowing the fire from the range. Nothing was saved. The house was insured, but the furniture was not covered.
