MELBOURNE, October 8.
It is believed that the watersiders will immediately move to extend the strike to other transport organisations, as the resumption proposal has been defeated. A number of vessels arrived during the week-end, and although 1,800 volunteers are working, there is still a shortage of labour. BRISBANE, October 8.
The watersiders here' decided to recommend the Council of Trades Unions to negotiate a settlement on the lines of the removal of the free labour from every port, the suspension of the Beeby award, the restoration of all the previous conditions, the repeal of the Transport Workers’ Act, and the reinstatement of all the unionists. FREMANTLE, October 8. At a wharf labourers’ meeting today, a motion to resume work was declaed carried, but it was challenged by a large section. The Disputes Committee is now seeking a way out of the impasse. VOLUNTEERS KILLED. MELBOURNE, October 8. . An inquest was held to-day on the ' two men recently killed while working cargo as volunteers on the wharves. The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death. The Coroner asked the press not to publish the names of the volunteer worker’ witnesses, who feared the vengeance of the strikers. MANUKA PAID OFF. WELLINGTON, October 9. The Manuka which was to have left for Melbourne yesterday will be paid off here, in consequence of the uncertainty of the labour conditions in Melbourne. Most of the passengers will go via Sydney on Friday.
