HINDUS AND MOSLEMS CLASH

Serious clashes occurred between Hindus and Mohammedans resulting in large numbers of casualties at the celebration of Ganpati, a Hindu festival, in centres of Bombay Province. At Surat and Nasik several police officers, including Europeans, were injured, on attempting to separate the fanatical religious opponents. 'At Nasik, Hindus attacked a Mosque while the Moslems were at prayer. A mob of ten thousand assembled, and a threatening situation developed but the crowd was persuaded to disperse. At Surat, the police were forced to Open fire and disperse the rioters who stoned a Hindu procession. There were many casualties, and a tense situation prevails. There was rioting also at Poona 'where the Moslems refused to obey the police order to dispense, and a fracas between Sikhs and Moslems at Hyderabad in the Deccan, to which place armed troops have been sent.
