FIRE AT WESTPORT
TWO SHOPS DESTROYED.

WESTPORT, September 30.
About midnight on Saturday, a building, comprising two shops and dwellings, owned by Mr. J. Carmine, and occupied by Mr. J. W. King (fruiterer and confectioner) and Mr. and Mrs. Shrives (the latter using the front por-. tion for dressmaking and millinery) was destroyed by fire. The flames extended to the Westport “News” Office, which also sustained Ramage by fire and water. Baillie and Co’s 'store, on the other side, separated by some 12 feet from the burning building, was saved, intact. The insurances are: J. W. King, stock and fittings, £350; Shrives, stock and furniture, £400; Westport News, £2OOO on building, machinery and stock.
ARSON ALLEGED.
DANNEVIRKE, October 1.
A man named Walter Heiford, aged about 48, cook by occupation, was remanded this morning till Friday next, on a charge of alleged arson. Accused was seen about 7 o’clock on Saturday evening in the vicinity of» Ranfurly House, a boarding establishment near the railway station. He set fire to -curtains in a room, and was subsequently arrested. . ' A couple of hours earlier, the curtains of a room in another part of the building were also discovered on fire, but so far the accused is not connected with this outbreak.
