GOVT. CONTRACTS FOR EMPIRE. tAdstralian Press Association.) ißy Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) . LONDON, September 28. The Conservative Party’s conference unanimously passed a resolution urging that all Government contracts should give preference to Home and Empire goods. Mr Amery, on behalf of the Government, said that they unreservedly accepted this motion, which the Imperial Conference had adopted, and the Government had instructed all Departments to give an effective substantial preference to Home and Empire products. Apart from its oil fuel, he said, the Admiralty had purchased 98J per cent, of its requirements in-, side the Empire, while 98 per cent, of the meat supplies for the three services was bought in the Empire. However, an unlimited preference was impossible, as the interests of the taxpayer and the general community must be watched. Replying to a speaker who complained of the Post Office buying foreign bronze wire, Mr Amery said that Jicy were prepared to pay substantially in excess of the foreign tenders, out they were not prepared to pay British rings an excessive price.
