The Christchurch Technical College tburing teams which have been on a visit to Westport arrived -in Reef ton on Friday a little after noon and were taken charge of by scholars of the Reefton District High School, amongst whom they were billeted. During the afternoon they met representatives of the local District High School at hockey, basket ball, and football. Ideal weather conditions prevailed although the recent heavy rains left the ground somewhat slippery. At hockey the visitors were defeated by 11 to 1. At basket ball the visitors were beaten by the local school by 10 to 4. At football the visiting team had a win just at the close of time, one of the boys scoring. Wakelin and Gibbard scored tries, and Hooper potted a goal for the winners. King scored twice for Reefton school, Pat Scott converting. Mr Fred Cutbush was- referee. In the evening the visitors were entertained by the management of the Princess Pictures, and at a social at the school and left for Christchurch by this morning’s train. Before the conclusion of the monthly meeting of the County Council on Thursday, Miss Farrell, assistant- to the Coujrty Clerk, in the absence of Mr W. B. Auld, who is at present attending the County Clerks’ Conference at Wellington, handled the minutes, and outward correspondence, and was complimented by the County Chairman, Mi W. Clayton and by Mr D. Panckhurst, who congratulated Miss Farrell on her efficient handling of the work. Mrs R. Gibbelini, who underwent a successful operation at Reefton Hospital on Wednesday, last, is now progressing towards recovery. Mr W. Clayton was the recipient of congratulations yesterday by the councillors individually and the County Council as a body on his appointment to the Greymouth Harbour Board as the representative of the Inangah.ua County. Mr A. E. Loach, of Christchurch, organiser of the Reform Party, arrived in Reefton on Friday and went/on to Greymouth. He returns on Sunday and goes on to Westport on Monday morning. The annual ball of the Reefton Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Friday evening in the Theatre Royal, and as in previous years an energetic committee had spared no effort in regard to decorations or catering. The scheme employed in this year’s decorative effort was entirely new and the lighting installed under the supervision of Mr Walsleben, and the electric light corporation staff, with the the lamps showing out on the walls hall, was particularly effective and pleasing, the greenery providing an effective screen from too strong a light, and the large bell in the centre with small globes of different colours put an excellent finish on one of the best decorative efforts seen this year at the Theatre Royal. The function was very largely attended and the night was ideal for dancing. The Excelsior orchestra, consisting of Mrs Magee (piano), Miss M. Costello (violin), Mr. Spencer (banjolin), and R. Magee (drum and jazz effects), supplied excellent music. Messrs D. Twoomey, W. Hunt and J. Lawry were M.C.’s, and the floor was in excellent condition, the hall while dancing was in progress presented a very brilliant scene. The supper was generous to a degree, and during the supper adjournment, Mr W. Clayton, County Chairman, Mr J. B. Auld, senior County representative for Reefton, expressed the thanks and appreciation of the public to the Brigade for their work during the past year, more especially for their efforts at the big fire in Broadway in February last when, but for the work of the Brigade the whole town would have been destroyed. He thanked the public and citizens for the assistance rendered them in making the ball a success, more especially the ladies’ committee. Dr. W. A. Conlon and members of the Electric Light Corporation’s staff for their help in decorating the hall. A two years’ bar was presented to D. Twoomey, completing seven years’ service, and service stars were presented to Foreman Powley and Foreman Parkinson completing live years’ service, and three years’ service certificates were presented to Foreman S. Newcombe, W. Hunt, Jas. Banks, and Jos. Panckhurst. Dancing was resumed and carried on until the wee hours.
