PIG IN THE HARBOUR

(Special to “Star.”)

AUCKLAND, September 29. Considerable excitement was caused on the wharf front yesterday when a large black pig jumped from a moving lorry, ran down the launch steps in Quay Street and plunged into the harbour. The - animal swam at a good rate under the Ferry wharf, and remained there until two of the Ferry Company’s employees attempted to rescue it i,n a dinghy. After much manoeuvring a line was secured to the pig, which was dragged aboard with difficulty. It struggled violently, finally capsizing the dinghy, and throwing the would-be rescuers into the wafer. The two men scrambled ashore, one still holding the line which had been made fast to the pig. The animal was finally hoisted on to the wharf in a cargo net. A LUCKY DRAW. A. remarkable coincidence in connection with the drawing of the Akarana Yacht Club’s art union for a model yacht, occurred last evening,, when the holder of the winning ticket actually drew it himself. The drawing took plac eunder the supervision of the police , and representatives of the Press. Fifteen persons were present, but of these only one, C. Kavanagh, was a private ticket-holder, having no official connection with the drawing. When the actual drawing had to be performed, it was decided that Kavanagh should do it. Marbles containing numbers were placed in five separate bags, and one marble was drawn out of each bag, making up the number 11858. No one' was more surprised than Kavanagh, when he ascertained that tihe winning ticket was held by him. Two months ago Kavanagh had taken a book of tickets to sell, and as he had not sold all of them, he decided to buy the remainder. The winning ticket was one of these.
