BLACKBALL NOTES
(Oux- Own Corresiiondent.)
Mr Jack Stenner, who has been an inmate of the Grey Hospital lor many months, has returned home t o Blackball.,
The success achieved by the local Junior Leaueites over the Nelson Creek Juniors on Saturday last, in the Challenge Cup game, was rather belated. A. last-minute try and conversion, turned what otherwise appeared to be
a certain defeat into victory. Needless to say, the effort was dheered to the echo by local partisans. The Runanga Senior League team failed to fulfil their “‘Bradshaw Cup” game fixture on Sunday, which came as a disappointment to the large crowd present at the local Domain. The local unemployed workers are joining up fwith the unemployed of the various West Coast districts, in a mass demonstration at Greymouth this Saturday. Two bands, the Blackball Silver Band and Pipe Band, will take part in the procession.A free railwayticket and also a free dinner will be alloted to each, individual of the local unemployed ranks participating in the demonstration.
Airs T. Kerr (sen.) left Blackball on Thursday for Wellington, en route to Australia, on a three months’ holiday visit.
Air C. White, of this township, entered the Grey River Hospital on Tuesday for medical treatment. Mr T. Caldwell (Deputy) of the Blackball Coal Company’s staff, entered the Grey Hospital last week, owing to his receiving rather serious injuries to the first .linger of his right hand. From latest reports he is still
confined to that institution, and is progressing favourably. Mr Jas. Neilson (jun.) left Blackball on Thursday for Sydney on route Io South Africa. Mr Neilson’ lor some considerable time has been employed, on tihe engineering stall at the local mine, and local residents wish him well in his new surroundings. The local mine workers resumed coal production on .Monday morning, alter being idle on Thursday and Friday of last week, and a full week s work is now practically assured. 11. is stated that mil of the 170 Blackball Mine, workers who received I notices of dismissal, about 60 have been found work', and judging Irom tin* recent weather conditions the workers who cavilled the Brunner track job. will have anythin!.; but. big cheques to lilt when jjay day comes round. The local climatic conditions dining the week have been rather wild and boisterous, with thunder and lightning predominating al intervals. The local schoolboys’ Soccer teams pul. up a good performance on Saturday last al Grevmouih in the Primary Schools’ six-a-side tournament, and the manager of the local boys’ team is expecting his juveniles to be in at the “<le:ilb” on Saturday.
The Rewantii Soccer team are scheduled to visit Blackball this Saturday, and success for the home team will in all probability see another RunangaB 1 ackball final for medals.
