MEETINGS

’ GREYMOUTH FIRE BOARD. \ The ordinary meeting of the Greymouth Fire Board was held last evening, in the Board’s office, there being present, Messrs Haycroft, Green, McGinley, Perotti, Clarke (Superintendent) and Barrowman, secretary. In the absence of Mr J. Steer, Mr Green was voted to the chair. The Canterbury Fire and Accident Underwriters Association wrote re water pressure. The letter was discussed in committee.

Superintendent Clarke reported an > accident to Fireman Nelson while on duty at McLean’s fire. Advice was received of , several changes in the personnel of the Brigade. Motorman A. White had resigned, his place being taken by Fireman J. Grant. T. U. Steel had been appointed to fill Fireman Grant’s position. Fireman M. Lynch had resigned from the High Street Branch and T. Malloy was appointed to his place. Fireman T. McKay had also resigned. The Chairman of the Advisory card, Plunket Society, wrote asking for assistance from the Board.—Already replied to that the Board was not in the position to accede to the request. The Superintendent, Mr T. Clarke, , reported as follows for the quarter ending September 27: —During the , quarter the Brigade received two calls, one to a dwelling in Thompson Street, ; which was only a small outhouse, and < one to D. McLean’s warehouse in < Boundary Street, which owing to the - quantity of inflammable contents and j the late alarm, proved a serious outbreak, and was practically a total loss. 1 The Dennis motor pump was again i prominent. During the quarter four £ members have resigned, three of them < having left the district. Three new t members have been appointed, while c there is still one vacancy, which will e

be filled in due course. All musters and calls have been readily attended and good order has prevailed. Necessary repairs to buildings and plant have been attended to, including new floor in both Board room and vestibule at the Central Station and reno-

vations to the Board room, plastering and painting are still in hand. I would recommend that a double-headed valve hydrant be provided for use when pumping from the main with the motor pump. The steam engine is still in hand, and I would recommend the advisability of again advertising it for sale. Nothing needing special attention has occurred during the term and all usual routine duties have been attended to and all gear kept in good order. Since the foregoing was written, a small outbreak occurred at Rewa Hospital, but no structural damage was done. It was decided that the matter of procuring the hydrant mentioned in ’ the Superintendent’s report be held over, and that further action would be taken in disposing of the steam engine.

Several routine matters were dealt with.
