NEW AMBULANCE

HOSPITAL BOARD DEBATE.

The subject of a new motor ambulance was referred to at last evenings, meeting of the Grey Hospital Board by the Chairman (Mr. J. W. Hannan), who said that he had been y 11 3" cussing the matter with the Medical Superintendent. In view of the Boaids unsatisfactory financial position, it was thought it might be possible to deter the purchase oi a new ambulance, lhe Westland Hospital Board had an arrangement with Newman’s Motors, (Hokitika, by whom a large car and a stretcher were supplied when required, for use as an ambulance. Mr. Harker: It only seems as if W'e are delaying the evil day. We have got to get an ambulance. The finances will be better next year than they are this year, but if we are short we will have to strike a levy. t The ambulance Is already provided for in the estimates. I don’t think a ca'r and a stretcher would be satisfactory, especially for country patients. 1 The Chairman said the Board decided at its previous meeting to write to the Department, stating that, in view of the lower cost of an American chassis, compared with an English chassis, the Board desired to procure an American chassis. The Minister had replied, declining to agree to the purchase of a chassis other than English. The Chairman said that what was wanted was an ambulance that would stand up to the rough work on the Coast. The i chassis recommended by the Minister might be suitable for city work. ' In reply to Mt. Barrowman, the Chairman stated that an English chassis, with ambulance body, would cost ' £lOOO or £llOO.

Mr. Brislane: We are not in a position to lay out £llOO now'. Mr. McTaggart: We could get it on the time-payment system. Mr. Brislane moved that Messrs Harker and Barrowman make inquiries and report to the next meeting. 'l'lie resolution was seconded by Mrs. O’Brien, and carried.
