(Per ■ Press Association.)
INVERCARGILL, July 15.
, A mass meeting of the unemployed here was held in the Labour Hall, Invercargill, on Saturday afternoon. Upwards of one hundred men attended. The attitude of the Government and of the local bodies was severely criticised by various speakers.
A motion was passed asking that the Government .cease their present “stopgap method of dealing with the unemployment problem, and institute a land settlement policy, which would provide work and reclaim unproductive farm lands.”
The importance of a speedy solution of the problem was stressed by the quotation of the cases of married men, with large families, living on £1 and £2 per week. One particular case, that of a man suffering from war injuries. and keeping a family of five, was cited. The meeting was unanimous in its denunciation of the attitude of the local bodies, and asseirted that the statement that work was available in the country was untrue. The Chairman, Mr. Tom O’Byrnc, stated that a list of proposed works had been drawn up by the Borough Council, and that, work would be commenced immediately.
The roll of unemployed opened at the Labour Hall now contains 160 names.
