FOOTBALL NOTES
RUGBY UNION. STAR V. UNITED. Stars defeated United at their first meeting this season,, but the rapid improvement in the United team has increased their prospects of turning the tables when these old rivals meet tomorrow at the Park. Uniteds may be strengthened by the inclusion in the forwards of T. Burley, last year’s captain, and an old West Coast representative. The team will otherwise be the same. The United backs are steadily improving, Jenkins and Jamieson being contenders for representative honours. Stars will be without the services of the captain and half-back, Reynolds who is suffering from an injured leg. “Barney” Brown will fill his position. Nelson is also unable to play on account of an injury, but the forwards will be up to full strength. The prospects favour United in what should prove a great tussle. At Hokitika, the competition leaders, Excelsior, will meet Kiwi, which should result in a keen game. On the last occasion they met, a drawthree all, was the result. The Kiwi backs have been altered, McCleary moving out to five-eight and McGill going into half. The Cobden-Kumara junior match is set down for the Recreation Ground at 3 p.m. 1 THE TEAMS. UNITED. RUGBY LEAGUE. MARIST AND BLACKBALL. The clash of the season will be the meeting on Monday at the Recreation Ground of Marist and Blackball. Given fine weather, a great game should result. Marist hold a commanding lead in the competition, but that they are by no means invincible was proved by Nelson Creek last week-end, when they were defeated B—o.8 —0. They are a good dry ground team, light, fast, and capable under favourable conditions of giving a clever exhibition of the League code. « Blackball will be fielding their strongest team, 'with Dodds back again to lead his side. The Blackball forwards are a vigorous pack. Grey will meet Runanga on / Sunday at Dunollie. The Grey team has been altered, the Masons coming into five-eight. Both these players have been starved for opportunities this season. Johnston will captain the team vice Thomas, who is standing down under medical advice. Runanga will have Harrison, who formerly played for the club and recently belonged to the ex-West Coasters' Club, Christchurch, while Pinn will be back at full-back. On Monday night, after the Marist-Blackball match, the selectors will meet to pick the team to represent the Coast against Buller for the White Horse Cup.

Owing to Mr A. Thomas, the captain of the senior team, acting under medical advice, having to forego play for the remainder of this season, the club elected Mr W. Johnston to the position of captain. Mr A. Feilding resigned as delegate to the Centre, owing to him being ineligible to represent the club on the senior body, as he was a referee, and referees cannot act as delegates to clubs. The club appointed Mr W. Ryan to fill the vacancy as delegate to the Centre. Mr J. Thomas moved a resolution that the Centre 6e asked to instruct the fixtures committee to arrange all the Grey Club’s home games to be played at the Recreation Ground on Saturdays. Several members spoke in favour of the resolution, which was carried unanimously.
