WAIKATO DIOCESE
THE CASE FOR BISHOP
(Per Press Association.)
HAMILTON, May 29.
The attitude of the Bishop of Waikato, Kt. Rev. Dr Cherrington, regarding ritualism is vigorously defended in an editorial article in the Waikato Magazine. The article states: ‘‘From some of the statements recently made, it might reasonably be supposed that the Bishop had been guilty of interfering with the parishes in such matters as ritual. No directions, however, or suggestions as regards ritual have been made at any time to any of the clergy of the diocese All that the Bishop has done has been to make an offer to the Cathedral authorities of some of the vestments given to him in England and in Mauritius. These have unanimously been accepted by the Cathedral Vestry. The Bishop would not have made the offer had not vestments been in l use in St. Paul’s for years before the Bishop made, or suggested, any variations in the ritual in use of the Cathedral, even though, as Bishop, Tie might have done so in his own Cathedral. The .Standing Committee have met regularly, and there have been no dissensions whatever in the accredited body of the Church. The Bishop in any action he has taken lately has been advised in every detail by members, clerical and lay.”
