PAPAROA MINE
COMPANY CLOSING- DOWN. One of the best known of West Coast coal mines, that of the Paparoa Company, is to close down, ami ninety employees have received a fortnight’s notice, to date from Friday next. The directors have, it is understood, agreed to offer the mine for sale as a going concern. The numerous miners affected will anxiously await the appearance of a buyer. If a sale does not eventuate, the position will be very serious for the employees. Times have been' none too bright for West Coast miners for a considerable period, but a small pay is better than total unemployment. The Paparoa Aline, whii is situated at Soldiers’ Hill, three miles from Blackball, has been, worked for the past twenty yearsj'and approximately a quarter of a million pounds have been spent upon the mine and railway. The Paparoa coal is well known for its quality, and prospective buyers will find the mine, buildings and workings in splendid condition The Paparoa Range, rich In coal and gold, was the first land sighted by Captain Dumont D’Urville, when he visited New Zealand in 1827.
