IRON AND STEEL WORKS. SYDNEY, March 9. A new British Australian company has been formed to develop the iron and steel industry at Port Kembla. Two leading British companies and two Australian companies are co-opera-ting, and between them t will supply an initial capital of five million to develop the industry. TAXATION EVASIONS. MELBOURNE, March 9. Justice Starke, in the High Court, refused to make an order - in the Abraham’s income tax case, and proceedings were adjourned sine die. Judge Starke’s judgment said the avowed purpose of the proceedings was to use the judgment of the Court for the purpose of executing and enforcing an arrangement with defendants, and so long as that arrangement and purpose subsisted, he was not prepared to give any judgment lending the aid of the Court to any such purpose. FIRE. SYDNEY, March 9. The damage at Hudson’s fire was much greater than first estimated, and will run into many thousands. After the original outbreak was subdued, three other outbreaks occurred and the firemen had strenuous work to prevent, it spreading. All the fires are now controlled, and the danger is over. LATER. Damage at Hudson’s fire is estimated to exceed £60,000. The fire was not discovered till it had obtained a strong hold. The absence of wind greatly assisted the firemen.

MINERAL STATISTICS. SYDNEY, March 9, The \alue of minerals won in New South Wales in 1927 is estimated at £18,497.000, a decrease of £440,000, compared with 1926. The quantity of coal won Isat year was eleven million tons valued at the pit mouth at £9,782.000. 'Phe value is the highest on record. The value of output of silver, lead, and zinc, however, was £4,482,000, a decline of £1,264,000. The iorn and steel manufacturing industry continues to expand, the output from ores mined in New South Wales being 119,000 tons valued at £654,000, an increase of 75,000 tons compared with the previous year. The yield of gold amounted to 18,032 ounces (fine), valued at £76,000.
