TENNIS

CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 24. Canterbury to-day regained the Wilding Shield from Wellington, winning in the series of seven matches to five for the first day. Canterbury led by five matches to one. Heavy rain overnight made the courts sodden to-day, and play was only determined upon by a vote of the players. Ollivier did not try at all against Malfroy, who was playing well. Seay and France played brilliant tennis under the bad conditions. After losing the first, set against Walker, McGill led Walker 5-1 in the second set, and had four set points, three of them in one game, but he could not do the neecssary. Angus and Wilson played well, Wilson being the more- forceful and accurate. Angus and Walker overwhelmed Wilson and McGill in the doubles, and Olliver and Seay retired against France and Malfroy, it being stated that Olliver had ricked his back. Detailed results are as follow (Canterbury players mentioned first): — J. Ollivier lost to C. E. Malfroy 1-6, 3-6. J. A. Seay lost to D. G. France, 4-6, 4*6. C. Ahgus lost to W. R. C. Wilson 6-2, 0-6, 4-6. K. J. Walkfer beat J. McGill 6-2, 7-5. Olliver and Seay lost to France and Malfroy 6-3, 4-6 (retired). Angus and Walker beat Wilson and McGill 6-3, 6-1. FRANCE V. AUSTRALIA. MELBOURNE, February 24. In the singles Boussus (France) defeated J. Mclnnes 6/4, 8/6. Play in the first set was disappointing. Both players were over cautious. The second set showed better tennis.,, Mclnnes led 3/1. Boussus’ service gradually gave him advantage. In the mixed doubles J. Borotra (France) and Miss Boyd defeated J. Hawkes and Mrs O’Hara Wood 3/6, 6/5, 6/4. The match was of sparkling tennis, Hawkes playing grandly. Borotra’s superb play dominated the last few- games.
