EXECUTIVE MEETING. A meeting of the Executive of the West Coast A. and P. Association was held this afternoon, present: Messrs H. W. Kitchingflam (President), A. J. Palmer, T. Topliss, H. G. Carter, A. Bradley, A. H. McKane, J. Keller, C. S. Dalgliesh, N. B. McCallum, T. E. Coates, W. Hughes, and W. Norton. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. H. Parfitt, E. Warnes, W. R. Kettle, P. J. McLean, and J. Mulcare. The Jubilee Ladies’ Committee applied for leave to make a door in the partition between the dog show room and flower stalls. It was resolved that the request be granted subject to the door being closed up after use to the satisfaction of the Ground Committee. Mr F. Izzard wrote offering £lB for the Publican’s Booth at the forthcoming A. and P. Show. He also tendered his resignation as a member of the Executive. Resolved that the mattei - be left to the Executive officers. The Railway Department wrote advising the train arrangements for the Show, and stating that the excursion fares would apply on the second day of the Show. The Totara Flat (Grey Valley) branch of the Farmers’ Union, wrote offering suggestions regarding this year’s programme. Mr Hogarth, a dog fancier from England, wrote that he would be willing to judge at the Show provided a sum of £lO was allowed to cover his expenses to Greymouth. Mr McKane thought the offer should be accepted as Mr T. W. Hogarth, being one of England’s best judges and dog fanciers, would be likely to give satisfaction. The President stated that three fox terrier brothers would be competing at the Show, and it would be more satisfactory if a judge from a distance wore appointed. Mr Carter moved and Mr, Keller seconded that the matter be left to the executive. . Mr Topliss reported that his committee (ground committee) had met the Grey Trotting Club regarding the charge to be made for the use of the Park and grandstand. The Club offered the Park and grandstand for the two days’- Show for one-quarter of the gate takings, and £2O for the use of the stands, He thought the offer a good one as there were several bays in the stand which would be let to exhibitors. Mr McKane moved and Mr. Keller seconded tha(. the offer be accepted. . A letter from Mr W. R. Peck, the representative of the A. and P. Association on the Royal Committee, wrote asking the Club’s opinion regarding the Canterbury Royal Show, in November. Mr Coates moved and Mr. Topliss seconded, that Mr. Pike he instructed to concur in the desire of the Canterbury Association re garding the Show. Carried. Regarding a shooting competition with clay pigeons, among the gun clubs on the West Coast, to be included in the A .and P. Show programme, the President favoured the suggestion. A cup had been donated as a prize, and he understood the clay pigeons were easily procurable. Mr. Coates moved, and Mr. Bradley seconded, that Mr. Carter make enquiries among the gun clubs and advise the secretary.
It was suggested that whippet races be included in the sports programme. The Secretary reported that he had placed two races on each days’ programme, and also one sweepstake. Messrs A. Grogan and T. Oxenham were appointed stewards to look after the whippet racing.
Regarding the Grey Valley Farmers’ Union request that points should be allowed on cattle having horns, Mr. Carter said it was for the Association to give farmers a lead on the question. Dehoring was coming into fashion and would be made compulsory. It was resolved to instruct the judges in the cattle sections not to award points for horns. | A number of applications were received for side shows. Mr Kitchingham pointed out that the committee ran their own shows at last Show, and made a profit of £27. He thought if the side shows were sold, about £5O should be paid for them.
Mr Topliss thought the side shows were a great attraction. The President moved and Mr Carter seconded, that the question be left to .the Grounds Committee. , It was decided to meet at the Park on Wednehday week at 7 p.m. to commence painting the Dog Show shed.
It was resolved that the same sub-
committees as were elected last year be re-elected, with power to add to their number. The President said it had been suggested that a canvass be made of the whole West Coast out districts to awaken interest in the Show. It was necessary to push the Show this year specially. The Secretary stated Mr Warnes would give a day to driving a man through Koiterangi and Kokatahi districts.
Mr Carter thought town members would have better luck than the country members.
Mr Bradley said that the Inangahua Association Committee were out every Sunday canvassing for members and entries for the Show. The West Coast A. and P. Association should reap some benefit by doing likewise. It was resolved. that the matter be left in the hands of the town executive.
The Secretary reported that Mr P. Hamer had arranged for the bullock competition. Owing to the fact that the grandstand would be occupied with exhibits on the first night of the Show, it was resolved to hold the Show social in the Druids’ Hall.
