NEW YORK, Sept. 10. France has won the Davis Cup. In the singles Lacoste defeated Tilden 6/3, 4/6, 6/3, 6/2. Cochet defeated Johnston 6/4, 4/6, 6/2, 6/4. Lacoste won the first game on his service with the aid of Tilden’s errors. Tilden won the second game with two service aces. Lacoste won the third, and he broke Tilden’s service to take the fourth. The Frenchman also won the fifth, and Tilden won the sixth. Lacoste playing a cool defensive game took the seventh by four to love, Tilden making frequent errors. Tilden took the eighth. Lacoste took the ninth, thus winning the set by six to three. Tilden made twenty-six errors and thirteen earned points. Lacoste made nine errors and no earned points. In the second set Tilden took the first three games breaking Lacoste’s service. In the second set Tilden was playing spectacularly, and he brought the crowd to their feet. The games then alternated to the ninth, when Lacoste broke through Tilden’s service Tilden retaliated in the tenth by breaking through Lacoste’s service, and so winning the second set by six to four. Tilden in this set made twenty errors and eighteen earned points. Lacoste made seventeen errors and thirteen earned points.. In the third set, the games alternated with the service until the seventh, when Lacoste broke through, leading by 4 to 3. The Frenchman took the next two games, thus winning the three sets by 6 to 3. Tilden appeared to be tiring. He made frequent errors. Tilden made twenty-nine errors and Lacoste nine.

The fourth set, Lacoste seemed fresher than Tilden after the rest. Lacoste broke through Tilden’s service in the second game, leading two to love. Tilden was erratic,, and his. opponent permitted him to beat himself on errors. The American then rallied desperately. He broke Lacoste’s service in< the third, but Lacoste won the fourth and the fifth. Tilden was now very tired, and the Frenchman went on to win the set by 6 to 2, and the match. Tilden made twenty-three errors and ten earned points, and Lacoste five errors and six .earned points.

COCHET V. JOHNSTON. In the first set in the other match, Johnston saved the first games following the service until the fourth, when the American broke through Cochet’s service. The latter retaliated by taking the fifth to love, and then he got into his stride, hurrying .the American into uncontrolled returns. Cochet broke Johnston’s service in the seventh. Johnston was rapidly losing control. He made many net errors' and Cochet won. the , set 6/4. Johnston made twenty-six errors with nine earned points, and Cochet eighteen errors with five earned points. Johnston served on the opening of the second set. Each broke through the other’s service until the fifth, when Johnston won his own with a desperate fight. Cochet took the sixth playing brilliant tennis, and catching Johnston clearly out of position, Cochet apparently disturbed by a gallery uproar, lost his own service in the eighth by four to love, and Johnston won the set by six to four. Johnston made sixteen errors with twelve earned points, and Cochet seventeen errors with eight earned points. Third set, Johnston seemed to be rapidly weakening. Cochet was very steady, and he took the first four games in succession. Johnston won the fifth and sixth, but Cochet broke through his opponent’s service again in the seventh and won the eighth on his own, and the set 6/2. Johnston made twenty errors with eight earned points and Cochet ten errors with twelve earned points. . In the fourth set, after the interval, slight rain fell as play was resumed but soon stopped. Johnston was absolutely fatigued, and was barely able to cover the court. Cochet merely parried with him, except for Johnston’s occasional flashes. When Cochet led 6/2, Johnston fought a terrific uphill battle, winning the eighth 10/8, and the ninth, but Cochet -won the tenth game and the set, 6/4, also the match and the Davis- .Cup for France. Johnston made thirty errors with twelve earned points, and Cochet twenty-eight errors with fourteen earned points.
