GLACIER TRIP
NEW ROAD WANTED. (Special to “Star.") WELLINGTON, September 8. The necessity for constructing a road from Paringa to Haast Pass, in order that tourists visiting Franz Josef Glacier, may make the round trip, instead of doubling back to Hokitika, was stressed by Mr Seddon, when he waited on Mr Coates and Mr Williams to-day, with other South Island members. Mr Seddon said that the trip was increasing in popularity and it was desirable that the road should be constructed in order that full advantage of the trip might be enjoyed. The distance from Parenga to Haast Pass was 40 miles, and he suggested that a survey should be made by the Public Works Department. Mr Coates agreed that it was desirable from the tourists’ viewpoint that the road should be made, but it was a hefty job. He thought they should secure an estimate of the cost. Mr Williams said that an estimate would be prepared. When he could spare the time, he would be pleased to go over the proposed route.
