SCHOOL (1) V. CRONADUN 111.
REEFTON, May 16.
This match was played on the Reefton racecourse on Saturday and resulted in a win for Cronadun, who, despite rumours to the contrary during the last few weeks, fielded a very strong team.
Cronadun scored first, but were only' leading by a goal to nil at change of ends, though very shortly afterwards they increased their lead with a gift goal through a mistake by' one of the School defenders. School forwards then indulged in some sparkling play which Jean Bierworth topped off with a great shot which the goalkeeper had no chance of saving. At this stage the combination between the school forwards was pretty to watch, their passing to one another beingmachine like in its precision and quite a revelation to some of the older players. Eventually' Jean Bierworth shot again from a waist high centre by Verna Morris and only missed the goal by inches. Cronadun then came into the picture and scored twice in quick succession per medium of Misses Lockington and Douglas; but the game finished with School attacking and gaining an abortive corner. For School all the forwards played well and Andrena Henry was the best of the backs. The others through inexperience were apt to get out of position and commit the expensive error of keeping the ball in the centre instead of playing to the wings when defending their own goal. For Cronadun experience in the defence counted as did the superior stick work of some of their older players, and Miss Douglas at centre-forward was always dangerous. A number of young players also showed up well.
