REEFTON, April 16
Good Friday at Reefton was quietly observed. At the church, services were held the Anglican and Roman Catholic communities holding special services suitable for the occasion. At Wesley Church the evening service was conducted by Rev. C. Robinson. The Salvation Army also held an evening service. The Wesleyan Bible Class Union boys are in camp on Mr T. Watson’s Farm at Mountain View and Mr Cyril Burton and Rev. C. Robinson are in charge of the camp. At Crushington the Bible Class girls are at the old hostel, Mrs Robinson being the camp mother. Mrs H. Bray of Crushington is in charge of the catering.
The entries for the motor cycle sports and cycle races exceed expectations and it is anticipated a record gathering will take place on the Racecourse on Monday. The course has been thoroughly tested by Messrs James, F. Cox and Chapman and they have pronounced it as one of the best they have tried on the West Coast and have expressed the opinion that a West Coast motor cycle record can be put up on Monday. They are reporting on the condition of the track to their respective clubs. There are several parties visiting Maruia Springs for the Easter holidays, among whom are Mr. W. Watson overseer for Murchison County Council and a party of Murchison residents who passed through Reefton en route to the Springs on Thursday afternoon.
Mr. A. M. Carroll, County Chairman, has offered to place the County Council Chambers, Reefton, at the disposal of the Greymouth Returning Officer on Wednesday, April 27, so that voters attending the Reefton races will be able to record their votes without inconvenience.
Mr L. E. Morgan left for Otaki, via Christchurch, on Thursday, where he will spend the Easter holidays with his relatives.
and Mrs. Cate, Upper Broadway, are spending the Easter holidays in Christchurch.
A meeting of the Inangahua Rugby League Sub Centre was held at Reefton, the following being present: Messrs A. G. McAlpine (chair), J. McElwee (sec), F. McCaffrey, R. Byrne, N. McVicar, N. Brooks, J. Burley. It was resolved that owing to Mr Hanstock’s election to the Presidency of the Buller Centre, he would be unable to continue as our delegate on. that body, to ask Mr Bernard, senr. to represent us. On the motion of Messrs Burley and McVicar it was resolved to forward through the Buller Centre, Waiuta’s application for reinstatement of one of their players. Upon the suggestion of the Chairman it was resolved on the motion of Messrs McVicar and R. Byrne, to play one benefit match during the season for the purpose of raising funds for the benefit of injured players and the emergency committee were appointed trustees of the fund, and a committee for the furtherance of the proposal. The Reefton Ladies’ Hoc-key Chib were donated £3/15/6 in accordance with an arrangement previously entered into with that body. The Secretary reported > that Mr Kennerly had offered to render first aid services at League matches of the Centre would provide the firs't aid requisites. It was unanimously resolved to forward a letter of thanks to Mr Kennerly and to ask him to ascertain the cost of his requirements.
It was resolved on of Mr Burley that the Emergency Committee be a fixtures committee and on the motion of Messrs Brooks and. Burley it was resolved to start the season’s fixtures on April 24, with a match between Mawheaiti and Waiuta at Waiuta for the Flannigan Cup, Mr Baird to be referee and the kick off to be at 2.30 p.m. Post Office time. In the event of the Reefton Jockey Club Committee agreeing to receive delegates from the Centre to their next meeting, the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurei’ were appointed to represent the Centre.
