OBITUARY

MR HERBERT PERKINS.

The death took place at Greymouth this morning of one of the oldest West Coast settlers, Mr William Herbert Perkinsi, aged 90 years! Deceased was a native of Manchester (England), and resided at Ross before coming to Greymouth in the early ’seventies. He commenced business as a photographer on the site of the premises now occupied by Williams and Ross, on Mawhera Quay. Later, deceased started the stationer’s business on Albert Street, which is still carried on by members of his family. ''The late Mr Perkins was always keenly interested in sport, and he was the sole survivor of the cricket team which met the English touring team at Greymouth in 1876. Deceased was also one ol the original party of men who took over the A ictoria Park area, with the object of forming a- cricket ground. The land was later taken over by the Greymouth Trotting Club, of which Mr Perkins was one of the first members. He is survived by his widow, who is not in the best of health; one son, Mr Edward Perkins, of Greymouth; and three daughters, Misses Lillian and Ada Perkins, of Greymouth, and Sarah, who is married and resides near Dunedin. Another son. Herbert, who was an accountant, in. the National Bank at Christchurch, died a few years ago. His widow visited Greymouth last week. The interment will be private.

MR FRED JACKSON.

WAIPUKURAU, April 9. Mi’ Fred Jackson, formerly of the Coast and lately of Maraekako, died at Hastings this morning. He slipped on some steps, and died as the result of his injuries. The late Mr Jackson, who was about 58 years of age, was contracting on the Otira railway line in the early days. He married Lily, a daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Russell- formerly of Marsden. Leaving the Coast 22 years ago, deceased went to the North Island and took up farming. He retired a few years ago, and is survived by an adult family. He was a brother-in-law of Mr A. C. Russell, chairman of the Waipukurau County Council, who is a former Mayor of Greymouth, where he was engaged in business for many years.

REEFTON, April 9

The death occurred suddenly last of Mrs Alice Knyvett, widow’ of the late Curry Pauling Knyvett, and daughter of Mr Isaac Freeth, of Nelson aged 46. Her only son was killed in the Great War. She is survived by one daughter.
