LATE MESSAGES

OPOTIKI, Feb. 26. A severe earthquake was felt here at three eighteen this morning, lasting about a minute. No damage was done beyond a few instances of broker* crockery. The Gisborne-Opotiki road is blocked with extensive slips, at Meremere Hill. Communication is being maintained by cars connecting at both sides of the slip. LONDON, February 25. No reply to the British Note to the Soviet is expected for some days, though official circles are of the opinion that the Russians prepared a reply days ago, as soon as the dispatch of the British Note was hinted at in tlo Press. The real reason for anxiety in Soviet circles in London is the studied mildness of the Note, because the Russians know perfectly well that the Note is based on a mere fraction of the information possessed by Whitehall, consequently the Soviet is left guessing what use will be made of the stronger grounds of complaints contained in the Foreign Office files. The British reply to “Izvestia’s” complaints of Mr Churchill’s. Lord Birkenhead’s and Sir W. Joynson Hick’s speeches, is that every one made a reply to flagrant breaches of the Russian undertaking to cease antiBritish propaganda.

THAMES, February 26. The Thames Harbour Board statement on the progress of works for which £60,000 was raised, show that £51,609 has been spent. The works are progressing well. The Engineer’s statement showed that the works will be completed within his estimate. It will be necessary to raise a further £6OOO as allowed by the Act, for railway siding and shoreward wharf approach, which were not in the original scheme. The Board’s general account shows over £BOOO better than estimated last June. The finances are in q very prosperous condition.
