FATALLY SCALDED.

AUCKLAND, February 25. A two-year-old boy, Owen Edward Dunne, who was accompanying his mother on a visit to a friend’s house, fell into a copper of boiling water yesterday. He died at the hospital today. The boy was the only child of Mr and Mrs A. E. Dunne, of Mount Eden.

MISSING DEFENDANT. HAMILTON, February 25.

No appearance was made by John George Henry Blane in the Supreme Court this afternoon when charged with discharging a firearm with intent to intimidate persons in a dwelling house. It was stated that the accused was seen in an advanced state of intoxication last night. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

MOTORIST KILLED GISBORNE, Feb. 26.

A. B. Wheat, superintendent for the Taranaki Oil Coy., was killed at Tokomaru Bay, last night by the overturning of a motor-car which went over a bank, falling about twenty feet. Mr. Wheat was an American engaged in superintending the work at the new bore a few miles from Tokomaru Bay.

BODY RECOVERED.

AUCKLAND, February 25.

The body of Robert Brown, who -was drowned on February 20, when fishing in the Rangitoto Channel, was recovered floating off Campbell Point this morning. Deceased, with three other men, was capsized from a small sailing h(oat. The other’ occupants were rescued by a launch, after they had been clinging to the boat for nearly an hour. In the meantime the deceased had disappeared.

TROUT POACHERS FINED DANNEVIRKE, Feb. 26.

In the Ormindville Magistrate’s Court three defendants, Basil Ellingham Donovan Edgecombe, and Hector Olsen, for taking trout by other means than with rod and line, and fishing without a license, were each fined £8 with costs, bringing., the total which each defendant had toSpay to £ll/6/6.

The S.M. said that if poaching were continued, he would inflict higher fines in future, if deserved.

FAMILY’S TROUBLES. FEILDING, Feb. 25.

The late Mr G. McElroy who was killed at the railway crossing at Ongarue was a former Feilding resident. His family has suffered a series of misfortunes. A little while ago his mother and sister were seriously injured in a motor accident. Then his brother, while driving a lorry, collided with a cyclist, who was killed. Next his father was seriously injured, through being kicked by a horse. Only last Sunday his brother’s shop and dwelling were completely destroyed by fire. His parents are now prostrated by the tragic Ongarue affair.

GAMING HOUSE CLOSED. CHRISTUti URCH, Feb. 25.

Mr Justice Adams gave judgment to-day on the application to close the premises in Madras Street suspected by the police of being a common gaming house. His Honor said he was satisfied that there were reasonable and ample grounds for the suspicions. The evidence of Walter Hulston, owner of the premises, was, rus Honor said, absolutely unreliable. A declaration was made as applied for, with costs of ten guineas, and disbursements against Hulston.

ANOTHER CROSSING SMASH.

MARTON, Feb. 26.

At a level crossing a few miles south of Marton yesterday, a steam lorry, driven by A. Pask, of Feilding, ran into the south bound New Plymouth express, ramming the second carriage. The lorry was badly smashed. The driver and passenger had narrow escapes, but were unhurt, missing death by a few inches. It is believed that a Maori passengei- on the train had slight injuries from flying glass. The railway carriage was not seriously damaged, the impact being a glancing blow.
