LEAGUERS DEFEAT WAKEFIELD VICTORS’ FINE DISPLAY (Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (By Cable—Press Assn. —Copyright.) LONDON, Dec. 28. The New Zealand League team beat Wakefield by 29 points to 24. The New Zealanders scored seven tries and four goals, and Wakefield four tries and three penalty goals. There were seven thousand spectators. The visitors gave a delightful exhibition and the best display of attacking seen in Wakefield for a long time. ’ They started sensationally, running strongly and passing magnificently, promising for a time to gain a sweeping victory. They speedily rattled up a big lead in the first half, Gardiner, Kir wan, and Brown scoring tries, of which Dufty converted two. Davies scored a try for Wakefield and Pollard kicked a goal from a penalty. The home team rallied in the second half, Davies. Waters and Parkin scoring, and Pollard goaling five times, twice from penalties. The New Zealanders’ attack continued vigorously, although their defence was faulty. Avery, Hall and Mason added tries, Dufty, whose kicking was admirable throughout the 'match, converting twice. ’ The team was: Dufty, Brown, Kirwan, Brisbane, Gardiner, Hall, Delgrosso, Menzies, Herring, Mason, Thomas and Avery. MAORIS BEAT CARDIFF. LONDON, Dec. 28. The Maoris defeated Cardiff by five points to three. Twenty-five thousand witnessed the Maoris’ magnificent victory after a tremendous struggle. The Cardiff pack’s characteristic fierce rushes severely tried the Maoris’ defence on several occasions, a z score being averted in the nick of time. Ould was once pulled down within a yard of the line. It was a ding-dong game throughout the first half. The first score .was se- v cured three minutes before the interval, Lee throwing out a clever pass and enabling Williams to gain a magnificent try, winch Male did not convert. The Maoris altered their tactics in the second half, adopting short pass- . ing, which immediately made them more dangerous. Falwasser was prominent in several dashing runs. Barclay missed one chance by over running the ball when in a good position. Play continued most vigorously, and Cardiff had the greatest difficulty in keeping the Maoris out. Half an hour before the end, Kingi secured a clever try, following a scrum near the Cardiff line, Potaka converting.
