RAILWAY MATTERS
— 1 1 -—— RESERVE AT KARORO Mr. Seddon, M.P., has received the following letter from the Hon. the s Minister of Railways:—“With referi- ence to the recent representations ’- made by the deputation from the e Grey mouth Chamber of Commerce to the Minister of Public Works urging that the railway reserve at Karoro be passed over to the Greyrnouth Borough Council, I have to inform you , the Department contemplates build- - ing railway cottages on thc land in I question in the very near future and I it is therefore regretted the Cham- - ber’s request cannot be acceded to.” REBUILDING GREY STATION “With reference to the receAt reprer sentations made by the Greymouth 3 Borough Council to the Hon. Minister 7 of Public Works urging the necessity ' of building a new railway station at T Greymouth, I have to inform you that ’ in formulating the programme of new t works referred to in my memorandum to you dated the 26th-ultimo the position of Greymouth was carefully considered in relation to the other important works embodied in the pro- . gramme. Consideration of finance i alone quite precluded all, or even a , considerable portion of the pro- ; gramme being undertaken at once and '. the procedure has of necessity been : one of careful selection, based on the principle of utilising the funds available for these and other works to the very best advantage, not only of the Railway Department alone but in the interests of the Dominion as a whole. . “I am aware of the inadequacy of the. railway facilities at Greymouth but regret for the reasons enumerated herein, I am unable to advance the position of that station on the .programme referred to.”
