PROBATION SYSTEM

AN AUCKLAND ENQUIRY. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, November 25. Practically all the social workers in the Auckland district attended a meeting held to consider the proposed changes in the probation system. Mr C. J. Tunks presided, and Archbishop Averill was among those present. The advantages of the present, system were discussed, and exception was taken to any steps that would introdgbe undue publicity. . A motion was carried expressing appreciation of the work of Mr W. J. Campbell, and the hope that he would be retained in Auckland. The meeting approved of the proposed extension, of the probation system as outlined by the Chief Probation Officer, provided it was regarded as imperative that the Auckland officer should give his whole time to the work. Rev. Jasper Calder was appointed secretary of the meeting and instructed to write to the Chief Probation Officer, seeking more definite information as to the proposalsto appoint committees of social workers, as to duties and status, official or otherwise, of such committees, and the relation to individual delinquents.
