(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, Nov. 26. Mrs Gouclie, of Hampden Street, met with a painful accident on Wednesday evening. Whilst removing clothes from a line in the yard she slipped and fell, breaking a bone jn her left wrist. Whilst the Chinese Bung Tuck was • absent in Greymouth on Wednesday evening neighbours noticed that his hut on the Beach Road was on fire. They put out the fire and called the police, as there was a suspicion of incendiarism. Mr Lorenzo W. Mulholland,<>3o years of age, son Qf Mr and Mrs Mulholland of Kokatahi, died on Wednesday evening. after a short illness. Deceased was a native of Kokatahi. in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday Mr Meldrum. S.M.. delivered bis reserved judgment in the case against Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmill Company, for allowing sawdust and refuse to How into the Hokitika River, a stream in which trout and salmon have been liberated. The Magistrate said that, in his opinion, the evidence shows, beyond doubt, that the sawdust from the mill was placed in a dump hear the bank of the river and that it was carried directly from the mill to the river through a fluming connected with the mill, and that the defendant knew it was being so carried on October 18. Defendant was convicted and lined £2 and costs. In a. similar case against the Diggers Sawmill Company the Magistrate intimated that a conviction would be recorded, but that an adjournment would be made to allow of evidence being given as to the proper name of the company. • Yesterday the County Overseer (Mr Millner) brought a case against Orr Bros, for £25 damage to the Hau Hau road through heavy motor lorry traffic. Judgment was given for plaintiff for the amount and £3 6s costs. Kumara and Stafford people will regret to hear of the death of the Rev. Sampson Stephens (reported in last night’s “Star.”) The Rev. Mi - Stephens was vicar of Kumara and Stafford some ten years ago. He leaves two daughters—-the eldest Betty being in England. His wife died in Australia before his coming to New Zealand.
