SHIPPING NOTES.
The Kaponga arrived last night from Dunedin, via Bluff, with general cargo. She is loading timber for Adelaide, and sails via Westport to complete. The Kaiapoi is due this afternoon from Auckland with general cargo. She loads coal nt" this port for Wellington. The Kaimai is expected to sail from Wellington about Saturday next for Grey mouth direct. lhe Ngakuta is due-about Tuesday next from Wellington, via Westport, with general cargo. She loads coal for Wellington, completing at Westport. The Kartigi is due about Tuesday to load coal for Napier, Tauranga and Auckland, and completes at Westport. The Orepuki leaves Lyttelton tonight for Nelson, Westport and Greymouth with general cargo. After discharge she loads coal for Nelson. The Alexander arrived this morning fror Wellington, via Nelson and Westport, with general cargo. After discharge she loads coal and timber for ’ Motueka. The Titoki leaves Wellington on Saturday for Greymouth direct with general cargo. After discharge she ] loads coal for Onakaka. ' The Gabriella is due from Wanganui about next Saturday, and will load a full cargo of timber for Sydney. RIVER PLATE STEAMERS. -

The Royal Mail and Nelson steamship lines are negotiating for five fast 15,000-ton insulated passenger ships for the London to River Plate trade. The first one will be laid down when the coal strike is settled. FIRE ON SHIP. ADELAIDE, October 14. The British India steamer Janus, from Calcutta to Adelaide, arrived to day. “When 60 miles west of Neptune Island, off the western side of the entrance to Spencer Gulf in a rdging gale, a fire broke out on her shelter deck. It was found that bales of kapoc and com sacks in No. 3 hatch wer? alight. After seven hours’ hard fight the fire was subdued, but it was necessaiv to jettison many tons of damaged cargo. ■-
