AUSSIE CRICKETERS

SLATED BY CRITICS.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)

LONDON, Sept. 15. It is interesting to note the English viewpoint of the calibre of the Australian team in the closing days of what certainly ha.s been an unsatisfactory dull, and uninteresting tour. It must be said at the outset that the critics were never lenient towards the Australians, but it comes as a surprise to hear from such a prominent commentator as Colonel Trevor, of the “Daily Telegraph,” that there were only three Australians in the present team fit for a place in an English test eleven. These are Macartney, Oldfield, and Mailey. Colonel Trevor says that Macartney and Oldfield would literally walk into an England eleven, which might also be glad of Mailey’s help, even though he is not comparable io the great googly bowlers such as Vogler, Faulkner, and Bosanquet in the test series. Therefore, the Australias were asked to beat an eleven in which only three Australians were good enough to win places. They were well beaten, as every judge knew they would be, and beaten on their merits fairly and squarely. The 1926 Australians will not occupy a high place in test fame. They are definitely below the 1921 standard, and most critics realised from the first match at Maidenhead that Gregory would terrorise no more. NEW ZEALANDERS’ TOUR. (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N.. Sept. 16. The following advice from the New Zealand Cricket Council that the proposed tour of England will not prejudicially affect the future temps of Australia, also that the minor associations will not be allocated a'definite quota of shares in the company to finance the tour, the Manawatu Cricket Association has now withdrawn its opposition to the tour and supports the same. , '
