ARBITRATION COURT
COOKS AND STEWARDS DISPUTE (Pei Press Association.) AVELLINGTON, Sept. 14. At the Arbitration Court in the cooks and stewards dispute, for the employers it was stated that since the sitting of the Conciliation Council the parties had agreed that the rate for steerage cook in the Alaunganui and Makura only shall be £1 less than the rate fixed by the court for ship’s cook. The parties have also agreed that in the clause relating to cargo steamers, the rate for second cook where three are employed shall be' £l/10/per month above the rate fixed by the Court for assistant cook on cargo steamers. In respect to the hours of labour at sea, it was pointed out that the Union’s claims were identical to those made by the Union on previous occasions, and were again brought forward, notwithstanding the Committee’s decision against them. Arguments against the eight-hour day similar to those heard in the stewards’ case were advanced, and the Court was adjourned till to-morrow morning, when consideration will be given to further phases of the dispute.
