ROSE BEATS HAHN. (Per Press Association.) . WELLINGTON, March 7. Great interest was taken in the athletic sports here yesterday, as the Americans, Hahn and Scholz, were making their first appearance in Wellington. Hahn and Rose contested the mile, in which Hahn did not show up as prominently as usual at the finish.. Rose and Hahn were together over the first quarter mile, which was done in 63 secs.<The second took 69 secs; and the. third 68 secs. Rose finished second to Priestley (50 yards) in 4 min 22 2-5 secs. Hahn, evidently tiring, at the finish, was- unplaced, 17 yards away. In the 1000 yards, Hahn ran a great race. He passed his opponents in the final stages and won in 2.18 2-5, which is a New Zealand record. . ' > Rose won the two miles in 9 mins 57 secs. Scholz again ran well. Leadbeater (two yards) won the hundred yards, Scholz being second. The time was 10 2-5. ' - The 220 yards resulted. —Scholz 1, Jenkins 2. Time 22 4-5. . The 120 Hurdles was won by Kalaugher (scr.) in 16 4-5 secs., and the 220 yayds was won by Preston (18yds). The javelin throwing was won by Kalaugher (32 feet) with 153 ft lin. In putting the shot, Brown (2ft 6in) Avon with 42 feet. G. Munro (scr.), being second with 41ft 9in. The Ladies Race of 100 yards was-won by Miss Manton (scr). ! in U 4-5 secs, and the ladies’ 120 yards by Miss-Porter (scr.) in 14 4-5 secs. At the concluding gathering, the Americans pvere a r demonstration, the vast crowd cheering, and cheering again. The visitors are very;popular. The attendance wa s a revelation. Such crowds as watched them at Wellington were seldom seen in the States. It is stated by a visitor who saw Rose ti-un at Masterton on Thursday, that if he had not been blocked by the : limit men, he could have beaten the Woi’kDs record for the mile. CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS CHRISTCHURCtI, March 7. The Canterbury Athletic Championships were held on Saturday. There were no outstanding performances, but there was promising material in the distance events. Canterbury’s team for the New Zealand Championships should be strong. J. H. Malden put up the best individual performance, winning the mile and three mile in 4 min 46 secs, and 16 min 22 2-5 secs respec tively. C .H. Taylor won the 440 yards in 52 2-5 secs. J. Murphy won the 100 yards in 10 1-5 secs. J. Batstone reached the standard height of 10 feet 6 inches in the pole vault, while J. K Dickson jumped 20 feet 1 inch in the long jump. Canterbury Club won the Watson No. 10 Cup for the Club Championship, and the Peterson Shield for the inter-club relay race. Eight clubs competed.

OTAGO RESULTS. DUNEDIN, March 7. At the Otago Athletic .Championships, a strong 1 wind interfered with the competitors, but Cabot put up a splendid performance by winning the mile walk in 6.35 3-sj, half a lap ahead of the next man. In the three mile he all but lapped Wilson, the only other competitor, and won in 22.21 1-5. This < is an athlete who was picked out by Scholz as a brilliant performer. D. H. Morgan won the Reid Cup for the third time and it becomes his property. Olsen, who put up • a fine race with Hahn some weeks ago, won the half mile in 2-5 3-5.
