REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent,) REEFTON, March 3Mr F. W. R. Godden, the newlyappointed superintendent and engineer of the Reefton Gold Mines, with his wife and family, arrived by train last evening. Messrs A. Ferotta. (president) and A. P. Carroll (secretary of the Reefton Jockey Club) left for Christchurch by to-day’s mail train in connection with the Peart appeal case. Mr W. H. Kennerley, of Hukuwai, was in town to-day on a business visit. Mr and Mrs R. French, of Christchurch, are visiting Mrs French’s parents, Mr and Mrs W. E. Burley. At the Magistrate’s Court■ to-day, Thos- Sweeney was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment for failing to comply with a previous order of the Court. Excellent results have been obtained in Reefton within the last few days by the possessors of wireless receiving sets. The rendition of “Faust” by the combined Wellington Choral Union and Dunedin Choral Society was heard here perfectly by Messrs Prentice, Elliston and other enthusiasts, the leading features of the recent Bands Contest also came through perfectly, even announcing the prize winners and the points secured, and the reception given Robertson, of Westport, was in the nature of an ovation. Our little valley in the hills is not so far behind the larger centres in regard to wireless sets, and the success of those who own them at present will be an incentive to others to partake in the pleasures of this most interesting hobby. Fine weather still prevails, and gardening enthusiasts are attending closely to their show exhibits, for which -this year, if entries are any criterion, there is going to be keen competition for the various prizes. The rainfall for February at Reefton was 4.140 inches in 15 days, with rain, maximum fall 0.670 in. on 22nd. Total to date 11.080 in.
