That the ways of departmental official dom are passing strange, even .to G-il-bertian, in the .town .of Greymouth, is the conclusion the Mayor, Mr W. H. Parfitt,'has'been forced to. This morning,'; .the Mayoral attention was drawn to a drain which was being “put down” by some of the railway maintenance staff outside the railway statiop, in Mackay . Street. The fact that the pipes were being laid in a way likely to cause inconvenience to the Borough, sump, caused, the Mayor to inquire if a certificated drain-layer was doing the work. An answer in the negative, and also the information that, ’’being slaves ,to duty, the men could' only cease work at the. fiat of ithie boss’ F who was out of town caused, the Mayor to, interview the maintenance foreman, the stationmaster, and, final, ly, the District' Traffic' Manager, all of whom had no power to interfere. The latter, however, suggested that a telegram’to Mr McNair, District Railway Engineer,' might bring orders to “cease fire.” The suggestion was acted upon, and the telegram duly dispatched M Mr McNair. In the meantime, pending a repij, klw wurkmen are. cheerfully “carrying on.”
