FIRE BRIGADES
WEST COAST CONFERENCE.
The annual meeting of the West Coast Fire Brigades’ Association was held at Westport on Saturday in the Fire Brigade Station, the President Mr. McKendry, '(Westport) being in the chair. The Tollowing delegates were present: White (Greymouth), McFarlane (Kumara), Deere (Greymouth), Capt. Gilmour (Cobden), Capt. Smith (Denniston), Lieut. McEnaney (Kumara), Capt. Coxall (Reefton), Capt. Curtis' (Westport), Secretary Walton (Greymouth), Advisory Sup. Watts (Auckland). Apologies were .received from Ross and Otira Brigades. The President welcomed the delegates ; also Sup. Watts and trusted they would all enjoy their visit to Westport.
A vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Sup. Bright Cobden and late Fireman Green, Reefton. The report and balance sheet was read and adopted. Sup. Watts congratulated the West Coast Association for the good work done and also for the sound position in. which they ' stood.
The Chairman welcomed Mr. Rose, of Christchurch, who had presented a handsome cup for competition amongst' the different brigades. Mr. Rose suitably replied stating that it would always' be a pleasure to him to assist volunteer .firemen.
It was resolved that the Rose Cup be perpetual but the winners receive a gold inedal each, Sup. Watts and Mr. Rose donating the same for this year.
It was resolved that the winner of the Browning Cup (one man) which goes to the Brigade, should receive a gold medal. The next demonstration will be held at Greymouth in the first week in November. The election of officers took place with the following result: President: A. White (Greymouth), Vice-Presi-dents: Capt. McFarlane (Kumara), Capt. Curtis (Westport), Sup. Smith (Denniston); Treasurer: P. Deere; Secretary:* J. G. Walton. It was resolved that a hearty vote of thanks be recorded to Secretary .Walton and Past President McKendry for their past service for the Association. On Sunday the executive with Mr. Rose and Sup. Watts were taken to Denniston, where the visitors were cordially received by the Denniston Brigade. Before leaving (being Mr. Rose’s first visit) he was presented with a beautiful carved book made from Denniston coal. After being shown around the workings, the visitors returned to Westport after a delightful trip. The following were the points obtained in the different competitions. Tennant Cup.—Greymouth 23£, Cobden 19, Westport 10J, Denniston S, Kumara 7, Reefton 6. Rose Cup.—Cobden 6, Grey 5, Westport 3L Reefton 2. Saraty Cup.—Greymouth 12, Denniston 8. Cobden G, Westport 4. Browning Memorial.—Greymouth 4, Westport 3, Cobden 2, Reefton 1. The Russell Aggregate Shield goes to Greymouth for the third year in succession.
