IRISH CONTROVERSY
PROSPECTS OF SETTLEMENT.
BRITAIN TO PAY.
lAuntraliaa snd N.Z. Cable Association.,
LONDON, November 30.
The “Morning Post’’ states hope is now rising in the Irish Free State that the conference aj, Lonaon will ,»lve fhe boundary crisis amicably. The Free State Government is anxious ter peace, partly because the Republicans are using the cris's to regain puLliic support, which they have lost during the last two years. A politician, who is in close touch rli Dublin says fhat if the boundary report is published and it thereby becomes operative, the knell of'President Cosgrave’s administration will have been sounded. On the contrary if the Free State agrees to, the frontier remaining as at present, and >1 edges itself not to raise the question for a number of years, the f ree State must have some concessions from Britain in order to save its face, ’he concessions being probably of a Fnancial nature connected with Ireland’s share of the national debt. DE VALERA’S- SPEECH. .
LONDON, November 30.
Mr. de Valera, addressing his constituents at Ennis, urged the Republicans and Free Staters to unite in defence of their common interests, as they did during the war against conscription.
He declared : “England cannot continue ruling and cheating both the ■Northerners and Southerners, unless she finds Irishmen to play her game. I don’t want partition, but if. partition is necessary, it must not be worse than under the Treaty. Mr. Griffiths only accepted the Treaty because Air. Lloyd George, Mr. Churchill and Lord Birkenhead promised that Sir J. Craig’should not coerce those desiring to unite with the Free State. When Mr. Griffith was irrevocably committed, these honourable gentlemen lore up the pledges.”
