The examinations for the Public Service are being held at Reeftom Some 17 candidates are sitting, under tlie supervision of Miss Helen Shepherd. Mrs and Miss D. Robinson, who have been visiting Christchurch, returned by Saturday’s mail train. Mr C. H. Trihgham, of Wellington, chairman of directors, and Mr Bruce, secretary of the Reef ton Coal Co., arrived in Reefton on Saturday, and left for Wellington this morning. The members of the New Zealand Defence Forces’ permanent staff stationed in the Nelson and Westland districts, left for a refresher' course at Burnham by this morning’s mail train, the Nelson and Westport’officers joining the train at Stillwater.

Owing to the illness of Mrs Joseph Lamberton at Hastings, Mr Thos. Lamberton, of. Reefton, left for that place by Saturday’s overland train. The anniversary services of the Salvation Army’s Sunday School were celebrated at Reefton on Thursday evening last by a programme of music and other items rendered by the children, after which the yearly prizes were distributed. On Sunday the services were continued, and the service of song “Little Dot” was rendered in the evening. Staff-Captain Perry presided at the Thursday evening gathering, and the service on Sunday evening was most impressive. An improvement to the appointments at the Reefton Racecourse is the construction of a new judge’s box in concrete at the eastern end of the grand stand. This when completed will place the judge above the heads of all the spectators and give him a clearview of the whole. , length of the straight. The work is being carried out by Mr D. Panckhurst. The course and tracks are looking their best just now and reflect credit on the caretaker (Mr Jno. nickton).
