BULLER NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) Mr and Mrs Beilby, who have been visiting in the Nelson district, have returned to Westport. Mr C. A. Wood; who has been visiting his parents, has returned to Greymouth. Mr J. Jefferies, oL Millerton, who has been on a holiday visit to Christchurch, returned at the week-end. Mr G. A. Webb, of the Education Department, has arrived in Westport to give drill instruction at the school. Dr Keith and Nurse Anderson, of the Health Department, are visiting the schools in the Westport district. Mi* H. P. Lawry, ivho has been holding Court down the Coast, returned to Westport on Saturday. Miss Cohen, of Reefton, is visiting Westport, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs H. P. Lawry, Russel Street. Mr Henry Bennett, son of Mr ■ and Mrs T. Bennett, of Seddonville, died in the Westport Hospital yesterday. He had been ailing for some time, was a returned soldier, having seen active service in the Great War. Deceased was a native of Denniston, 34
years of age. He leaves a wife and three young children. Miss E. Schadick, of the local Post and Telegraph office, returned on Saturday from a tour of the North Island. x Despite the weather conditions on Saturday, there was a big attendance n at the Square to witness the sports meeting held by the local, Fire Brigade. The meeting was a good one, all events being got off well to time. The secretarial duties were carried out by Mr R. Hickford for running and cycling events, and Mr R. McDonagh for the brigade events. The Municipal Band made its first appearance in public and enlivened proceedings with spirited music. Following are the results: — RUNNING. • 130 Yards Sheffield —Ist heat: O. Jones (11) 1, O. Doel (7) 2. Time 13 3-ssecs. 2nd heat: C. Kearns (10) 1, E. R. Wood (10) 2, Time 13 2-ssecs. Final: Jones 1, Doel 2, Kearns 3. Half-mile.—J. Harris (10) 1, J. Caldwell (20) 2, R. McKenzie (35) 3. Harris came at the finish with a fine effort and won by five yards. Time 2min 15sec. One Mile.—G. Blythe (65) 1, J. Harris (scratch, including 20 yards rehandicap) 2, R. McKenzie (75) 3. This was a great go and the finish proved exciting. Harris threw put a determined challenge to Blythe in the straight, but the veteran responded gamely, and in a punishing finish won |by a couple of yards. Time smin | 9secs. I CYCLING EVENTS. I Boys’ Race, half mile.—Billy Bird 1, f Stan Whiteside 2. One and a-half Mile. —lst heat: J. Lindop (scr) 1, D. Wright (10) 2. 2nd , heat: R. Hultquest (10) 1, C. Coxall (scr) 2. Final: Wright 1,- Lindop 2, Hulquest 3. The final was robbed of interest through Hultquest, Lindop, and Coxall capsizing, allowing Wright I to establish a big lead. Tlhe fallen men | remounted and made a good attempt I to overtake the Reefton man, but without avail. I Morgan Wheel Race (boys’ chamI pionship). —1 mile: Billy Bird 1, Stan ‘ "Whiteside 2. Three Mile Wheel Race.—J. Lindop - (scr) 1, D. Wright (20) 2, C. Coxall (scr) 3. Hultquest (20), Fergusson (200) and Rhodes (230) also competed. This proved a spectacular event, producing an excellent finish. A furlong from home the field was bunched, but Lindop jumped to the lead and, although challenged strongly by AV right, scored a popular win by a length.
