FIRE BRIGADES
CONTESTS AT WESTPORT. Though the weather- was anything but propitious on Saturday, the Fire Brigades’ demonstration, held at Westport, was an unqualified success. T. J. Watts, of Auckland, was present on behalf of the United ’Fire Brigades’ Association, and expressed satisfaction at the good standard of work ,by the competitors. The championship was won by the Greymouth Brigade, who won four events, securing the Russell Shield and Tennent\ Cup, as well as winning the Saraty Cup outright. Cobden Brigade accounted for the-Rose Cup, and Kumara the three-meh event. Thee results were as follow: — Baby . Rescue.—Greymouth (Blocksage and Mclntosh) 31secs., 1; Westport (Callaghan and Woodward), 32 2-5 secs.,- 2;’ Cobden (Mead and Skelton), 38 2-ssecs, 3>; Kumara (Fahey arid McErianey), 41 l'-ssecs., 4. Rose Cup (two men)—Cobden (Mead and Anderson, 46 4-ssecs, 1; Gieymouth (Blocksage and McKay), 51secs and Westport (Callaghan and Woodward) tied for second place; Reefton (Powley and Lawry), 63 3-ssecs, 3/ Three Men Event.—Kumara (Fahey Benyon and Fitzgerald), 34 3-ssecs, 1; Cobden (Mead, Skelton and Anderson) 38 l-ssec, 2; Greymouth (McKay. The only brigade not represented at the demonstration was Hokitika.
