NELSON EDUCATION BOARD. — u The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education/ Board was held on -Monday, at Nelson, when- the ‘following West Coast business was transacted:— The Secretary called the attention of the members to the financial position of the Board, and impressed on them the necessity., of /curtailing the demands. * The amount received for maintenance, was. approximately £4OO per month, last year they had received from the Government under this heading, £4BOO, yet they spent £6,149, the consequence being ’‘that the amount standing to the credit of that fund was very materially reduced. During the past year the amount spent on schools on the West Coast for repairs, .painting etc., had been, very Urge, and he mentioned the following schools; Denniston £350, Granity £247, Little Wanganui .£94, ami before painting Millerton School it. would take £l2o~to' effect the necessary repairs. He maintained that the system by which thp Department made. the maintenance grants was not just, it being .made on the attendance. Nelsbn had 143 schools and received in the year 1923 £4439, whereas Taranaki with 167 schools received £7288, Wanganui 199 schools, £13933, (an<l fully 30 per cent .were brick schools and would require very little for repairs), Hawke’s Bay, 192 schools, £7734. It was decided to bring the above matter' before the Minister, and endeavour to get an alteration made by substituting the number of schools lor the number of children, also to endeavour to. get a special grant for this year. The Department intimated that steps are being taken' to have the reserve. 1 near the Longford bridge, set aside for a school site.

A grant was received from the De* partment for the remodelling and improving the school at Alurchison. The f oilowing... t tendei> were received/ for the removal of the Owen Junction School to a more suitable site-, viz, H. Olson £149; F. Robinson £175 10s; Oxnam and Coy., £125 (accepted). The Lands Department forwarded a. tracing of addition to school site, and stating that the plan had been approved. The committee were authorised to submit tenders, for the fencing of the school grounds.

The following resignations were received : Chi Ide, Airs Al. S. T. East, Takaka, Dale, D. S. S., T. Rockville, McNabb, R. 1., A. T. Reefton, Scott V.L., S- T. Uruwhenue, Sloan L.C., S.T. Awanui, AA 7 hite J.L., H. T. Upper Aloutere., It was decided to transfer Vernor AV. Sadd to Uruwhenue, and to again advertise for a ffiale assistant teacher for Reefton. The Department notified that some 500 letters had been received from school children in Britain, in connection with the “Empire Service Letter,” and which would be distributed among the schools in New Zealand. The object of this service is to promote ah interchange of correspondence between the school children of the Dominions and the Mother Country. The success of the scheme m Britain has been overwhelming and thousands of letters are passing through the High Commissioner’s Offices to unknown scholars in every part of tho British AVorld. The forthcoming Christmas holidays were appointed from December 17 to February 2, 1926.
