AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB.

(Per Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, June 16. The Auckland Trotting Club has been granted permission to hold a meeting on August 22, in honour of the American Fleet visit. The Club has decided to include a Free-for-All, nine furlongs, for a. purse of £750. RACING NEWS AND NOTES. (By “Arlington.”) Buckeye is all right again, and should be in the first two at Napier on Friday. R. Johnston intends shortly leaving for Melbourne with his recent purchase Rational. Duo figures amongst the acceptors for the principal flat race at Napier Park. The Demosthenes gelding, who was the best three-year-old of his year, gave some evidence of returning to form last November, but since then he has repeatedly failed. If he can be kept sound, his owner may later ti-y him over fences. This was the idea of Mr. T. E. Whelch when he purchased the old gelding for 25gns. some fifteen months ago. S. Waddell has recommissioned Gold Light at Napier, and if all goes well in the meantime the chestnut mare will be taken to Randwick in the spring for the valuable weight-for-age races at the A.J.C. meeting. \Some jockeys do not care to admit the inconvenience of increasing age, and they dislike retiring from prominent participation in the sport, even though they often actually announce their withdrawal. Veteran Bob Lewis, of Flemington, who is 50 years of age, is a case in point, and another is the well-known lliccarton horseman, F. Dorter. After the success of Count Cavour in the Great Northern St. Leger, Porter, who has been associated ■with all the victories of Mr. J. S. Barrett’s three-year-old, announced his retireemnt, but now word comes from Riccarton that Count Cavour is to race in Sydney in the spring, and that Porter will go over to ride him.
