REEFTON, May 21.
At the beginning of, the week a numbet of local residents left for the larger centres on holiday and business! Mr Les Walker left for Nelson, Mrs Conway for Wellington, being called away owing to her mother’s illness. Miss Osbourne and Mrs Crowdis left for Auckland, and Mrs B. Holmes and Mrs Neill for Nightcaps, the latter visiting her son, Mr H. Holmes. Mr T. Newman, of the White Star car service, passed through Reefton on Monday cn route to Hokitika. At a. meeting of the Inangahua Trotting Club, held on Monday, it was decided to fall in with Mr H. W. Kitchingham’s suggestion as to the date of the next meeting of the club, viz., December 30, and Mr M. Fagan, president, was appointed delegate to attend the meeting of th© trotting clubs on the West Coast at Grelmouth on May 22. A statement of the club’s funds disclosed the existence of a debit, and the Chairman and Secretary were authorised to make any necessary financial arrangements. Work has commenced on the urgently needed repairs to the footpath at the Bank of New Zealand corner in Upper Broadway. The framework for the kerbing is now in, and the cementing of’the path will soon be completed. As soon as this is done it is hoped that Broadway at this point will not be required as a storm channel. On Monday at “Mountain View.” Marina Road, a pleasant evening was spent to celebrate the coming of age of Mr and Mrs T. ,R. Watson’s second son Leonard. Th’e young people spent a pleasant time with music and games, a. dainty supper was served, and the singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded a very pleasant evening. Mrs Shuttleworth and Miss Craw, of Chorlton, .Banks Peninsula, are on a visit to Rcefton, and are the guests at Mrs F. J. Heath, Dick Street. Miss Waghorn, of Banks Peninsula, is on a visit to Reef ton.
Mr H. Mathias, who has been ou a visit to Otago and the southern portion of the Island, returned to Reefton on Tuesday morning. Mr Mathias contemplates leaving for Kawarau in th» near future.
The shdp assistants’ euchre and dance in the bafidroom on Tuesday evening drew a record attendance. Twenty tables were in play and the euchre resulted in some exciting finishes. Three of the lady contestants had to cut for the lady’s prize, which was won .by Mrs Joseph, Mrs W. Cairns being second. Mr T. Williams was the winner of the cut for - the gent’s prize, with Mr Chamberlain second. The dance music was supplied by Mrs Hewison. Miss Farrell played the extra music. Mr R. Powley was M.C.
The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Stephen’s Church took place on Friday last. Rev. J. A. Bloyce presided, and the annual statement of receipts and expenditure disclosed a satisfactory financial-position. Tim reports of the Ladies’ Guild, Foreign Missions and Mite Society were read and adopted. The Vicar reported that work among the young people had been held over during tiro prevalence of the infantile paralysis epidemic. Mr A. B. West was appointed Vicar’s Warden, and the following Vestry wore elected for the ensuing year: —Messrs Cooper, Walsleben, Buckland, Gelston, Werry, Corrin, Instone and C. D. Mori. Eulogistic references were made regarding Mr W. Dunn’s many activities in regard to church work and regret was expressed that bad health prevented his nomination as Vestryman this year, after over half a century’s active association, with the church. It is stated that as soon as men are available th® labour force at the Reefton Coal Company’s mine is to'bo increased.
At the basket ball match on Wednesday at Reefton the Old Girls’ basket ball team deieated the High School Girls by 18 goals to 9. An outstanding feature of the game was Miss Farrell’s play. The following members will represent Shop Assistants in their forthcoming match against Landing on May 24 : Lawson Hunt (2), McNabb, Ching, Reid, Banks, Hudson, Hoy, Lithgow, Bierwirth, Chapman, I’anckhurst, Robertson, and Stewart. Emergencies: Shaw, Heath, Smith, Hoy and AlcInroe.
The County Chairman, Mr L. J. Bell, has__recpived the following message :’~“Your very kind message - of sympathy and condolence with myself and family in our bereavement has been most_gratefully appreciated by us and I shall be glad if you will cause an expression of our very sincere thanks to be conveyed to your Councillors and the residents of the County. —C.
